The Bovine Genetics Unit produces male and female breeders of Angus, Devon, and Hereford. The animals are raised in native pastures in the region of the Campos de Cima da Serra in Rio Grande do Sul.
Matrices are selected and perfectly adapted to very cold winter weather and forage species of native grasslands in the region. In this environment, reproduction occurs by the use of bulls, IA - artificial insemination or IATF- Artificial insemination for fixed time, TE - embryo transfer, or PIVE - in vitro production of embryos. The Semen used are breeders bulls with high DEPs for traits of economic importance as early to growth, reproduction, finishing, weight gain, easy calving and maternal ability. The animals must have these characteristics on the field.
The idea of the producers of Genetics Unit is to select hardy animals and adapted to the environment in which they are created, that is, native or cultivated pastures as rye grass and oats, associated or not with legumes.
The genetic characteristics prioritized by Beef Unit are: feed conversion, carcass yield and meat quality. In meat quality the most desired attributes are the marbling and tenderness. Animals with these characteristics have higher pay.
There is a strong commitment to the health of bulls that must be shipped with brucellosis and tuberculosis certificate and also vaccinated against IBR, BVD, and Leptospirosis. Furthermore are tested for their reproductive capacity, which involves the andrology exam, libido testing and the ability to ride. Females should be free and accompanied by certificate against brucellosis and tuberculosis.
Is under consideration by the producers of the Unit, a performance evaluation system of the progeny, to identify bulls with high performance and genetic potential within the desired characteristics. So, will be reserved semen and embryos and it will be available to customers.
